Important results from the project

RISE, SSAB, and NUC have studied graphene as a barrier additive to enhance the corrosion resistance of the SSAB-patented GreenCoat BT coil-coated steel. To optimize graphene-oil dispersion in order to develop the coating formulation enhanced by graphene to maximize the corrosion protection of existing SSAB bio-based coating.

Expected long term effects

A surface modification system was developed to disperse graphene in different desired diluent. A modified processing method was developed to prepare much more stable graphene dispersions. A series of methods for evaluation of graphene dispersions was established. Both UV and corrosion protection properties improved by adding graphene to the coating system.

Approach and implementation

We explored various surface modifiers and graphene grades and evaluated graphene dispersions in desired media. We developed some advanced methods for preparation of stable graphene dispersions. Additionally, couple of characterization methods were optimized to evaluate particle size, graphene concentration and colloidal stability of graphene dispersions. The graphene dispersions were successfully incorporated into GreenCoat® formulation resulted improved anticorrosion performance when applied on hot-dip galvanized steel substrates.
