Graphene materials - safe handling and feasibility study regarding toxicological evaluation

Reference number
Coordinator Västra Götalandsregionen - Sahlgrenska universitetssjukhuset Arbets- och Miljömedicin
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration February 2025 - December 2025
Status Ongoing
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project is twofold, to update recommendations for handling graphene materials in the work environment with the research results of the last four years; to study how to sample graphene particles in the work environment to enable toxicological studies and the possibility of testing graphene materials other than graphene oxide without the tests being affected by solvents, etc. In other words, to investigate whether it is possible to make toxicological testing more realistic.

Expected effects and result

The work will result in a report on updated recommendations for handling graphene in the work environment and will also increase knowledge of how particles can be collected in work environments and further processed for toxicological studies that can later be interpreted from a risk perspective for graphene and not for other media.

Planned approach and implementation

Part 1 is a literature study and part 2 is mainly laboratory studies with different starting points (toxicology and occupational hygiene) with the hope of being able to meet in the middle for more workplace-based toxicological studies.
