Field trials of graphene containing admixture for resource efficient, strong and frost resistant concrete

Reference number
Coordinator HIPOR Materials AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 745 000
Project duration April 2022 - March 2025
Status Completed

Call SIO Grafen: Collaboration on commercial applications with graphene - autumn 2021

Important results from the project

Numerous lab tests at LTU evaluated (2D) nanotechnology for strength, wear- and frost resistance. The results are protected by patent applications. 2D fab and HIPOR developed and scaled up production of cement and concrete additives to supply volumes for field trials and infrastructural projects. In a full-scale trial in Rättvik in May 2024, Swerock (mixing) and Gunnar Prefab (molding) produced four center railings for evaluation in Sundsvall as part of “Klimatarena Sundsvall”.

Expected long term effects

HIPOR Materials AB and 2D fab are ready to supply volumes for new field trials and new projects. Now when Sweden and Europe are about to improve roads, railroads and other infrastructure, we are prepared to supply technology and products for reinforced ultra high performing and sustainable concrete. We just started two new projects to verify the technology for road and industrial high wear surfaces.

Approach and implementation

The arrangement of lab tests in cement in parallel with the development of the nanomaterials was successful. Development and scaling up of production of the nanomaterials has also been successful, as well as the full-scale field trial in Rättvik. Communication of results is ongoing and the results are highly appreciated by future stakeholders. The biggest challenge for the project was that RISE chose to close down CBI at very short notice. It has been difficult to compensate for that loss.
