Important results from the project
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the immune system overreacts to an infection. This relatively anonymous disease is more commonthan the four most common cancers combined and has a higher mortality rate than acute myocardial infarction, which makes sepsis a significant challenge to human health. We propose CombatSepsis: a new ecosystem of actors with an interdisciplinary approach to stimulate innovation and provide solutions to major problem areas in sepsis. Our goal is to create a well-defined and sustainable strategy to reduce the mortality in sepsis.
Expected long term effects
It is apparent that a solution to the problems associated with sepsis requires a broad interdisciplinary strategy that includes contributions and innovation components from all actors within the ecosystem. A central component involves the construction of new collaborative interfaces where the healthcare sector, with an improved focus on sepsis, collaborates with pre-clinical research teams within sepsis and interacts with patient organizations and industry partners.
Approach and implementation
In this project we have analyzed the current eco-system of actors and goals within sepsis care and identified critical lock-ins that should be addressed in key innovation areas using a systems innovation approach.
