Important results from the project
The project achieved its objectives by demonstrating production of butanediol from lignocellulose-based hydrolysates with yields near theoretical maximum and by developing a purification process for further optimization and scale-up. Techno-economic analysis shows strong potential for the process and value chain, providing an important basis for future decision-making. The project has also contributed to competence development, new networks, and new initiatives for continued project development.
Expected long term effects
For Sekab, the results represent an important step toward commercial production of butanediol from forest-based residual streams. The project has strengthened expertise at RISE and demonstrated that residual streams from Metsä and Höglands Såg & Hyvleri are suitable feedstocks, although logistical and economic challenges remain. Overall, the project supports increased use of forest residues, reduced fossil dependence, and the development of bio-based value chains that strengthen Swedish industry
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out according to plan in close collaboration between the partners, with all parties actively participating in all work packages. The work was divided into six work packages covering the entire value chain from raw material to final product: sugar production, screening of microorganisms, fermentation optimization and scale-up, purification, and techno-economic analysis. The setup contributed to an efficient implementation and enabled the project objectives to be achieved.
