Call Build for the future - Innovation for a sustainable building and construction sector

Important results from the project

BIOFACE has achieved its goals and delivered strong results. Several material prototypes with improved technical properties have been developed and tested for fire safety, UV resistance, rot protection, and mechanical strength. Field tests of larger panels and an architect-designed prototype house demonstrated the material’s practical and aesthetic potential. The project also developed business models supporting future commercialization of sustainable biobased façade materials.

Expected long term effects

The project paves the way for a more sustainable construction and materials industry through the development of next-generation biobased façade materials. Results provide insights into how additives affect properties and production, revealing opportunities for resource-efficient manufacturing and circular value chains. The developed business models show commercial potential, and the prototype house highlights new design possibilities that strengthen Swedish innovation.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out as a collaborative effort where complementary expertise among the partners led to strong results. Research and testing resources at CIT and RISE were used for analysis and validation, while the industrial partners focused on practical material development, verified through extensive testing and evaluation from an industrial perspective.
