Important results from the project
The objective of the AVATAR project was to develop an assistance and coaching system for forest machine operators to increase operational efficiency and perceived job satisfaction in mechanized forest harvesting while reducing mental workload and improving the learning curve. A purposefully designed operator support-system may enhance both productivity and value recovery while improving occupational health and safety. This supports the role of forestry in the transition towards a sustainable, competitive bioeconomy in Europe.
Expected long term effects
Algorithms, based on CANBUS and sensor data, have been developed for harvesters and forwarders that: - identify and measure ongoing work elements. - analyze and roughly evaluate work patterns. A model improving the use of the harvester´s measuring system has been developed. A sensor platform collecting LiDAR data which, after processing, describes the machine´s operating environment. This constitutes the main components of the individualized operator support developed in the project. The system may be refined and improved as larger data sets are created through continued use.
Approach and implementation
The support-system was designed based on literature and interviews with instructors and machine operators. Algorithms based on CANBUS and sensor data were developed using the Troëdsson laboratory´s machine simulator at Skogforsk. It is possible to provide feedback, but the method should be refined. The model that predicts measurement accuracy is based on Skogforsk´s previous analyzes (e.g. of flat areas when measuring diameter). The model was implemented in 14 harvesters. The result is convincing. In one case, it led to technical modification of an existing harvesting head.
