Purpose and goal

The main aim has been to establish new PhD projects within the area ´Applications of HVDC and FACTS in Electric Power Systems´, and to supervise PhD students within the area. Regarding the creation of new PhD student projects, the goal was fulfilled in terms of two large project proposals were written and submitted in collaboration between KTH, ABB and other industrial partners. The goal of supervision of PhD students have been fulfilled.

Expected results and effects

When it comes to the two large project proposals, we unfortunately did not get them accepted, which of course was a disappointment. On the positive side, we can conclude that the work on the applications have implied deeper and wider contacts with co-applying organizations As concerns my role as co-supervisor, the progress of the PhD students is satisfying. Mohammad Nazari is expected to defend his thesis spring 2017, whereas Marina and Harold aims for early 2018 for their defenses.

Planned approach and implementation

Regarding the large project proposals, it seems reasonable to conclude that it is wise to reduce the size of future applications, in terms of budget and consequently technical content. The work as co-supervisor for one day a week requires some flexibility. Still, it is doable even if three students is a bit much, in particular during periods when all three produce written material and requests feedback. However, it is stimulating to see them develop as their projects progress.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
