Transformative technology – a basis for Sweden's future competitiveness
Transformative technology areas are fundamental for innovation, the industry's future growth and competitiveness and for us to be able to meet the major societal challenges. Investments in these key technologies create new companies and increase the opportunities for Swedish companies to develop and expand in a global market.
Transformative technology lays the foundation for new solutions, processes, products and systems that are important both in our industry and in our everyday life. They can be likened to innovative building blocks that can be used to reinforce, improve and change existing technologies and technical systems. These key technologies are needed in order for us to be able to meet global societal challenges and implement a transition towards a sustainable society in the form of, for example, autonomous vehicles, circular economy, electrification, sustainable energy systems, sustainable industry and food production. They contribute to strong competitiveness and a prosperous society.
Vinnova has chosen to focus on the four technology areas below that currently have a particular potential and relevance for our future societal development.
- Artificial Intelligence
- Quantum technology
- Extended reality (XR)
- Next generation wireless technology and infrastructure (6G)
New technology places eligibility requirements on Sweden as an industrial country
The countries that are at the forefront of transformative technology areas will be best placed to build a foundation for innovative and sustainable goods and services. Sweden distinguishes itself as a research-intensive, innovative country and it is of the utmost importance that we are at the forefront of transformative technology areas in order to continue to strengthen our competitiveness.
At the same time, transformative technology is knowledge-intensive and requires a high level in research and the education level of the workforce. In order for new innovative and relevant solutions to be developed and scaled up in a commercial aim, functioning business models, long-term perspective and the possibility of funding in risky projectare also required. In addition, regulations and legislation need to be adapted to the new needs.
Vinnova's role
Vinnova runs several ventures that support development and commercialization in transformative technology areas, which in turn can strengthen Sweden's global competitiveness, make Swedish innovation a significant export and contribute to sustainability globally. Through efforts in the form of early and sustainable funding, Vinnova reduces the risk of investments in technology areas in early development.
We need to strengthen the research-intensive deeptech companies.
Part of this is to strengthen the conditions for deeptech companies. It is often research-intensive companies that are behind the most ground-breaking ideas with potential to solve the major societal challenges of our time. In extensive programme, Vinnova also acts as a springboard to Europe and other markets for Swedish companies with the conditions to develop and implement innovations in key technologies.
