Competence center

In a competence center, universities, university colleges, research institutes, companies and public actors in close collaboration conduct world-class research in areas that are important for Sweden's competitiveness. Vinnova has granted 13 competence centers in various areas.

The competence center creates knowledge and networks

The centre's collaboration between different parties will lead to new knowledge. The knowledge must be able to be used in business or society to provide new products, processes or models. A center will also provide new networks so that companies have access to skills that meet their needs. The competence centers that have been granted build up lasting structures and networks that attract continued interest, both nationally and internationally.

Better research strengthens competitiveness

The long-term purpose is to increase investments in research and development. The purpose is also to strengthen research in Sweden in order to strengthen competitiveness and other companies in Sweden.

Further develop previous programme

The Competence Center program that started in 2015 is a further development of previous initiatives at Vinnova, such as the Competence Center Program (1995-2007) and VINN Excellence Center-programmet (2004-2016).

Our competence centers

The 13 current competence centers were granted through a targeted call for proposals to already Vinnova-funded centers and a call for proposals that was open to all. The centers are granted funding for five years, with the possibility of another five years after an international evaluation.

New center

The program will have a new open call for proposals every three years, where each call for proposals will lead to the granting of eight new centers.
