Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 625 000
Project duration December 2013 - June 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of Wireless @ KTH is to focus on 5G research, and to create a meeting place in Kista that supports Swedish industry and Sweden as exporting nation. By connecting to Ericsson, TeliaSonera, more than 30 SMEs, public authorities and research institutes, the center achieves a great spread of knowledge surrounding 5G development relevant to0 its partners. The result is that more SMEs than ever are involved in ´seed projects´ and thus can prepare for the future 5G market. In addition, the center´s researchers made important contributions to the European 5G research project METIS

Results and expected effects

The operational goals for Phase 2 have all been achieved. The research topics have included: the development of 5G (the EU Fp7 Project Metis), Energy Efficient Networks (the EIT ICT labs project 5GrEEn), Machine to Machine communications (M2M Rise), Rural coverage aspects (5G Off Road), and Smart Grids (LTE4SmartGrids). In total 5 major and 18 seed projects have been conducted during the period 2011-2015 engaging 15 SME partners. In order to engage and attract new partners to the center, a number of different events have also been organized, including close to 100 Friday seminars.

Approach and implementation

The strategy of the center is through participation in front edge European research build competence among KTH researchers. The competence is then spread to local industry partners through smaller projects engaging SMEs, networking and partner events such as local seminars and hosting international conferences. The strategy must be seen as succesfull since today more than 30SME companies are engaged in thecenter projects and activities. Given that today the majority of all people engaged in the ICT industry work in SME companies we believe that the center fulfills a strong need.
