Project duration October 2013 - August 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal was to get at least three, preferably five commercialized solutions which were met by a wide margin, and we have acquired and also shared with us by the practical experiences and challenges of open innovation competitions means. For New Tools for Health this has also opened new doors in the form of an expanded network and new cooperation opportunities. So far, three of the participating teams started companies that exploits the idea that was in the competition. We will continue to use innovation competitions as part of our activities.

Results and expected effects

The competition reached a large group of people who normally are not involved in development issues affecting welfare in general and silver market in particular. The participants expressed their appreciation that we have introduced them to this exciting growth market. Many have expressed that they feel there has been a mind boggling exercise who got them to think in new ways. Our hope is that this competition has helped to create the conditions to increase the attractiveness of the silver market and thus increase interest in investing time and money there.

Approach and implementation

The set-up was a combination of digital and physical activities during both recruitment and contest phase. We chose to go out with a broad challenge in which we defined three different tracks, that we defined the challenge, but not how or who it would be resolved. We feel that this was the right strategy for our competition, but of course it is easier to communicate if you have a narrower problem, like reduced CO2 impact in a city. The biggest challenge was to as an unknown innovation environment reach out and engage the just the right citizens who might have the right solution we were looking for.
