Important results from the project

Yes. The result is, among other things, a Vision of a winter square on the ice presented as an analytical and practical development and management plan where, among other things, prototypes are proposed to evaluate the practical feasibility of large structures of snow on the frozen river, the architectural impact on the city and the development of administrative collaborations. The need for new forms of collaboration between the municipality´s administrations has been identified and practiced.

Expected long term effects

The long-term significance depends on momentum and funding. Luleå municipality needs to communicate the Vision internally, with politicians and the local business community so that the motivation to develop the Ice Track and find complementary funding is placed on more parties than just the municipality. If successful, the result from Visions in the North is only the beginning of a larger development of winter-oriented urban spaces in Luleå, which can serve as an example for many other places.

Approach and implementation

The process consisted of different work packages. Some of the work packages were site analysis, urban space in winter, the place of culture in the city, analysis of scale and spatiality, specific material studies in snow and ice, activation and experiences of winter places, management work, creation of a vision and the creation of a development and management plan. These were the right activities, the schedule was followed and the collaboration worked well.
