Verification and quantification of interstitial fluid extraction using microneedles

Reference number
Coordinator ASCILION AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 000 000
Project duration April 2016 - April 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose and goal of the project was to evaluate and verify the extraction part of the novel glucose meter i.e. the ability to extract interstitial fluid and further to develop the business model and to improve the intellectual property rights around a future product. All goals have been reached and the company, including it´s patent portfolio, has grown thanks to the progress.

Expected results and effects

The goals of this project were to verify, quantify and investigate the extraction of human biological fluid and with the extraction associated parameters such as impact speed, extracted biological fluid, flow rate and gradient thereof. Ascilion is now well positioned to continue the development the microneedle chipset as a stand alone device intended for pain-free general extraction of bodily fluids that can be used in conjunction with any biosensor. Two patent applications as well as two new employees is another consequence of the progress within the project.

Planned approach and implementation

Ascilion has coordinated and managed the work performed in a classical project form, defined by the work packages, deliveries, schedule, and budget in the approved project plan. The project has been a good example of cross disciplinary collaboration between industry, academy, and health organisations.
