Purpose and goal

Restrictions on heavy traffic already exist: bus lanes, weight and height classes at bridges and tunnels, zone restrictions. What is missing is a way to know whether they are respected. The vehicle register gives the type approval, not what the vehicle actually is at the moment of passage. The project demonstrates a roadside solution that determines a heavy vehicle´s current configuration from 3D geometry and states how certain each assessment is. The goal is a market-ready solution.

Expected effects and result

The result is a solution that classifies heavy vehicles in live traffic, verified in three operational environments and integrated into Sensys Gatso´s platform. The effects arise for road authorities: bus lane use becomes measurable, strengthening public transport flow; weight and height restrictions at bridges and tunnels can be followed up, reducing the risk of strikes and closures; and heavy traffic can be steered away from sensitive urban areas.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out by XENSE Vision AB and Sensys Gatso Sweden AB, both in Jönköping, in five work packages over twelve months: project management and a joint set of requirements; development of classification and uncertainty measures; integration into the need owner´s evidence and case chain; field demonstration in three operational traffic environments, two of them in Sweden; and business model and scaling plan. The parties already work together weekly.
