Important results from the project

By manufacturing several different laminates with Papershell´s material with a mixture of other bio-based materials such as cork and flax, the set parameters have been evaluated and both the project´s purpose and goals are fulfilled. It is mainly how noise and vibration damping, impact resistance and heat conduction compares to aluminium. It turns out that the material produced in the project is very well suited for use in a snowmobile. A simplified LCA analysis also shows positive results. Further in-depth tests of the materials should be done, for example in an upcoming projects.

Expected long term effects

The results from the project show great possibilities for the Papershell´s material system in applications that require sound damping, heat insulation and impact resistance, even at temperatures down to minus 25°C. There are several components in a snowmobile that can be replaced with a material system from the project. The LCA study carried out in the project also shows good possibilities for the material. Overall provides this a good basis for further studies and testing for higher TRL, MRL and SRL levels, therefore a proposal for stage 2 will be submitted.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out with weekly coordination meetings where the work in the various work packages has been reported and the next week´s work planned. RISE´s participation in the project has made it possible to gain access to expert knowledge and testing equipment in the various areas. The work packages have given input to each other, and research areas set up in the proposal, as necessary to explore, have been tested and evaluated in order to come up with possible solutions. The results have also shown the need for further testing.
