Ultrasensitive label-free IR spectroscopy method for discovery of chronic pain biomarker signatures

Reference number
Coordinator Uppsala universitet - Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 905 917
Project duration September 2015 - August 2019
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Completion of the purpose and goal: 1.Purpose has been achieved to establish an infrared-based bio-diagnosis set-up for study of various diseases. 2.Dr. Kumar has adapted and used analysis technique, for enabling intelligent screening of clinical samples and also enabled a microfluidic set-up for biofluids, relevant for the disease. 3.Purpose to become an independent researcher has been achieved by establishing several collaborations, acting as project leader, presenting work in scientific forums, and receiving research invitations (British journal of dermatology).

Expected results and effects

Results and expected effects are as follows: 1.Unique IR imaging system has been established at Uppsala University which has potential to be effective for several disease diagnosis. 2.Non-invasive mode of exosomes based early detection of Parkinson´s disease has validated and cost-effective methodology of exosomes isolation has achieved. 3.The role of reactive fibroblasts in breast cancer progression has been shown which could be used for understanding of the cancer metastasis. 4.National and international collaboration will bring the positive effects on scientific career.

Planned approach and implementation

-Dr. Kumar has moved from Canadian light source, Canada, to Uppsala University -Established the necessary collaboration at Uppsala University and at the hospital -Set-up the infrared bioimaging lab for tissue, cells and biofluid analysis of disease -Developed the multivariate statistical analysis for discrimination within the large IR data set -Discovered the first time an IR marker for oxidative stress in the cell system due to the disease stimulation. -Validate the new ways for early detection of Parkinson’s disease -Published the scientific outcomes and achieved accolades
