Project duration December 2019 - January 2021
Status Completed

Important results from the project

TraceMet has developed a pilot system for calculating climate footprint and proportion of recycled metal for iron and copper, from mine to product. The pilot combines an IT-system, tracking the metal´s environmental performance along the value chain, with product category rules, ensuring that data is calculated and reported systematically and correctly. This enables a third-party verification and certification. Implementation and evaluation of environmental data have been provided, and successfully tested, by participating companies.

Expected long term effects

The pilot system has provided new knowledge and insights on traceability and chain of custody models for metals. This will guide the mining and metal industry how to design a future system to promote responsible producers and sustainable development. Awareness of the project is estimated to have increased in the mining and metal industry. In turn, this will continue to drive the development towards a sustainable metal production.

Approach and implementation

The certification system was developed utilizing relevant certified environmental product declarations and standards from the user group. Based on user group feedback, the system was improved with additional functionality to reflect the value chain. Using the methodology for Design Thinking and agile development, the user group systematically evaluated demonstrated test runs, resulting in a functioning software. All workshops and evaluations after the physical kick-off were conducted digitally which enabled high participation and commitment throughout the project.
