Purpose and goal
The Skogforsk labb objective is to develop and establish a data lab where the forest sector can and wants to share its own data with the right level of confidentiality, in order to develop climate-, environment- and resource-smart methods for sustainable forestry in cooperation with other actors. The lab will develop a platform for handling and sharing data, support use and method development based on real and synthetic data and methods such as artificial intelligence (AI) and offer a place for sharing algorithms and models to develop the forest sector.
Expected effects and result
Skogforsklabbet is aimed at the entire forest sector and data, results, methods and experiences will be shared openly. The lab´s functionality will be demonstrated with a case study around the companies´ own registrations of cultural remains during felling. The lab will contribute to increased data availability, stimulate collaboration, and increase the sharing of data with businesses, authorities, and researchers who today have challenges with getting access to certain data from companies or forest owners as the data becomes official document when handed over to authorities.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will be implemented during the period December 2023 to September 2026 and is divided into four work packages: Infrastructure/Architecture, Data utilization and modeling, Collaboration and communication, and Management model. We form a steering group that has an advisory role regarding the design of the data lab and principles for data sharing. We will also assemble a reference group with GIS users and representatives from companies, authorities and other interested parties, the core of which is Skogforsk´s user group for planning issues, PSG.
