Important results from the project

We developed “green” phenolic resins based on tannin – a renewable, competitive raw material. The work was carried out at RISE and Bi-QEM, and the concept was verified at kg scale at Bi-QEM’s pilot facility in Perstorp. We achieved our goals, although TRL and MRL levels were slightly below target. Tannin is a natural material with variable properties. We learned the importance of characterizing the raw material and adjusting key parameters to control the reaction during the project.

Expected long term effects

Development towards future products was the focus of the project. Important experiences and results were achieved. These results will be important in the future work towards green products, with properties equivalent to conventional resins.

Approach and implementation

With a large number of trials at RISE, we developed formulations for tannin-based resins, which were tested on a kg scale at BI-QEM in Perstorp. We developed additives to control the properties of the product, an activity that was outside the original project plan. We were able to answer the most important questions within the set timeframe. We see great potential to develop a renewable product that is competitive in the foreseeable future.
