Purpose and goal
The purpose of the project -to convey tailored information on vaccinations- was achieved since alternative methods of communication were implemented among Somali speaking parents in Rinkeby and Tensta. Activities and new communication channels were conducted and established according to plan. A plan for continued supportive structures for peers and integration of interventions in child health clinics ordinary activities are being developed. A plan for evaluation and long-term follow-up of MMR vaccination coverage is drafted and data collection for evaluation is in progress.
Expected results and effects
Seminars for parents and training of staff at CHC were implemented according to plan. Film in Somali with parents as positive role models for vaccination and other visual information is available on the project website. These tools are used as education and information material by the peers and CHC nurses. Several peers have been trained in vaccination and communication issues and are spreading information orally on vaccinations and child health, in their own networks. Evaluation of the impact of the interventions is initiated 2017 with the aim of long-term follow-up.
Planned approach and implementation
The project aims to implement and evaluate innovative communication methods to meet parents´ needs and requests of alternative communication channels on vaccination, and the need for new approaches to reach hard-to-reach groups. Success factors for implementation is close collaboration with the community. Also important with long-term preparative work to create trust and good relationship with the target group. It´s valuable to have an early dialogue on the conditions needed for implementation and long-term sustainable changes, including resources and support structures.
