Important results from the project

The Swedish Mining Innovation´s PhD student network brings together PhD students from all over Sweden with a research focus on mining and exploration-related topics. The network´s aim and objective is to promote contact and cooperation between PhD students from different universities and parts of the value chain, to promote contact with industry and governmental authorities, and to increase the PhD students´ awareness of challenges facing the sector. The network is coordinated by Luleå Tekniska Universitet and has more than 100 members from various universities in Sweden.

Expected long term effects

- students gain a broad understanding of the Swedish mining sector - industry becomes aware of ongoing PhD research - early opportunities for students and industry to get to know each other, career opportunities sooner after graduation - potentially career-spanning, wide and diverse network of experts across Sweden.

Approach and implementation

Several workshops to were held in the three large Swedish mining districts (Norrbotten, Skellefte and Bergslagen) + an international event. The themes are related to the mining industry´s role for economy, society and history, as well as challenges within the sector and the know-how which Doctoral students in the network can contribute with for tackling these. The network will also engage alumni members in activities and career days.
