Purpose and goal

The aim was to create good conditions for Swedish forestry to be able to communicate regarding sustainability ad LCA in a credible manner (B2B, B2C) and to simplify for both the senders and receivers of data. The national handbook, Product Category Rules (PCR) and LCI data set developed enables this. The project has contributed to the ongoing development of sustainability work within the Swedish forestry sector and gives tools to organizations far ahead to show their efforts in a credible manner.

Expected results and effects

A national handbook providing guidance to SS-EN 16751:2016”Bio-based products - Sustainability criteria” for Swedish forest biomass published. A PCR ”Basic forestry products” will be published within The International EPD System. LCI data sets which are internal deliverables. Swedish forestry will have increased possibilities for credible and objective communication regarding sustainability and LCA as well as increased transparency and coordination of LCA calculations within the sector.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was coordinated by SIS and had consensus as a focus. IVL, RISE and Skogforsk led the parts regarding PCR and data sets, while SIS led development of the handbook. The project collected 20 stakeholders from the entire forestry value chain, all have contributed actively. Both for the handbook and the PCR, additional stakeholder dialogue has taken place. The parts PCR and dataset have had an extra close collaboration thru an iterative process. Standards have been the basis for the work.
