Important results from the project

During the ongoing Corona pandemic, some industries have been forced to file for bankruptcy, dismiss or notify employees, which in turn has enabled an increasing workload for employees in the industry. Corona has shown that Sweden needs an industry that is rapidly changing its operations and adopting digital solutions. Ensure that the industry´s customers are not adversely affected by excessive lead times. The study evaluated the possibilities with Augmented Reality for customer support and troubleshooting when an urgent need for service arises, when travel has been prohibited.

Expected long term effects

AR is a technology that has matured in recent years and a number of industries have begun to use AR for various objective, but mostly for support and troubleshooting. The study shows that the technology is also useful for verification, quality review and training. AR provides the ability to connect long distance calls with picture sharing, and some providers allow this with 3G and low broadband while others require 4G. But when 5G is installed, AR will most likely be adopted by more industries. Not having to travel allows for reduced travel costs and contributes reaching the goal year 2045.

Approach and implementation

The project has conducted a number of workshops with all parties. Furthermore, several tests have been performed in both the office environment and production. The project has evaluated several suppliers of Augmented Reality (AR) around the world with a focus on functions, communication and broadband requirements, service offerings, hardware (smart glasses). Tests have been carried out in two underground mines to verify that the solution is durable for both hard and soft rocks. Based on the tests performed, AR allows significantly productivity-enhancing working methods.
