Call A new recipe for the food system: The pot of innovation - Experiment, experiment and explore

Purpose and goal

The aim is to explore how a clearly designed objective and targeted support can increase the production of legumes for human consumption in Sweden. The goal of the project is to design a policy proposal for legume investments by adjusting current support and instruments. The policy proposal could also contribute as a basis for investments such as the government´s idea of the Nitrogen Leap which aims to reduce emissions of nitrogen compounds as legumes have the ability to fix nitrogen.

Expected effects and result

A prototype of a support process that can explore the economic tipping point for transitioning to legume production for human consumption by adjusting current support and policy instruments in combination with alternative business models. Consider how the size of cultivation and geographical perspective affect the design and need for support. The focus is on the cultivation and processing stages, but actors from the demand side will be included in the evaluation of the prototype.

Planned approach and implementation

Compile support forms in Sweden linked to CAP and from support forms in other EU countries. Market analysis of estimated current situation and future needs with ongoing efforts in processing in Sweden. Evaluate relevance and/or possible lack of support with actors in primary production and processing with reference group. Develop a support tool for the search process. Evaluate the support tool on the current target group. Develop proposals for policy change needs for the current target group.
