Important results from the project
The project successfully developed a functional prototype of fiber-based lids that meet requirements for functionality and sustainability, with significant climate benefits compared to metal lids. The goals for manufacturing technology and testing were achieved, and improvement suggestions for future iterations were made. New collaborations with brand owners were initiated, and further research has been started to enhance the lid design and increase both strength and commercial viability.
Expected long term effects
The project is expected to have long-term effects by promoting the transition to sustainable, bio-based packaging, reducing climate impact and plastic use. It will contribute to a circular economy by utilizing recyclable materials and strengthen the bioeconomy. Through increased commercialization and further technology development, the project can also create new business opportunities and jobs within sustainable packaging technology.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out as planned with the right activities to develop fiber-based lids. The technical and sustainability goals were achieved, and prototypes were successfully tested. The timeline was followed, although some flexibility was needed to adjust the design based on new insights. No major external factors affected the project, and the collaboration between Blue Ocean Closures, Swed-Jam, and RISE worked well, enabling effective results.
