Important results from the project
In STM Validation Project (2015-2019) has the Sea Traffic Management concept been tested and validated. STM encompasses a digital maritime infrastructure, sharing of routes and voyage plans and digital services. By testing the concept and the services, a need for further research, development, demonstration, deployment and standardization has been identified.
Expected long term effects
By having ships sharing routes and voyage plans electronically with authorized instances like other ships in the vicinity, VTS, Coast Guard, Customs, Ship Reporting Systems and ports, navigational safety will be increased and environmental and climate impact reduced. It will also facilitate improved efficiency in services like improved route monitoring, just-in-time arrivals, right steaming and improved UKC Management (Under Keel Clearence)
Approach and implementation
More than 300 ships, 6 shore centres, 9 ports and 12 simulator centres around EU have participated in the testbeds. The industry has actively participated and 3 producers of navigational systems (ECDIS), 3 producers of traffic control systems (VTS) have developed STM functionality in their systems and provided systems to the test beds. 13 countries, 38 beneficiaries from authorities, industry and academy as well as 37 associated partners, have participated in the project. 512 navigators participated in the simulator tests and 87 organisations were engaged in port tests.
