Purpose and goal
The project aims to verify and adapt a civilian innovation, an AI-based sound detection system, for military applications. The goal is to reach technology readiness level (TRL) 6–7 through development, field testing, and integration in relevant military environments. The system will enhance robustness and flexibility in surveillance for Sweden’s total defense and civil preparedness, in line with NATO’s priority technology areas: AI, Autonomous Systems, and Next-Generation Communication Networks.
Expected effects and result
The project is expected to deliver a verified AI-based sound detection system at TRL 6–7, adapted for military environments. The system will enable robust, autonomous surveillance independent of visibility and weather, allowing early detection of vehicles, drones, gunfire, and other activities. The outcome will be strengthened total defense and civil preparedness through improved situational awareness, faster decision support, and lower resource use.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will be executed in three work packages: 1) Project management ensuring structure, follow-up, and preparation for the accelerator program. 2) Technical development, training AI models with military sound data and optimizing hardware and software for robust operation. 3) Field verification in realistic environments testing functionality. Work is conducted agilely with FMV and SWEDEC to reach TRL 6–7 and operational readiness.
