Purpose and goal
The project aims to explore the possibility of creating a smart steel platform for information exchange along the steel value chain. This value chain begins with steel production and ends with recycling. The project goals include: - to verifiery the technical viability of different concepts for the unique identification of steel Products. - to demonstrate the benefits from the SmartSteel-concept in pilot studies run at SSAB and Sandvik. - to create a roadmap for the long-term vision of ”Internet-of-Materials”.
Expected results and effects
The digital transformation of the steel industry is expected to provide new opportunities in value creation by adding database and cloud-based services to traditional steel products. The SmartSteel concept will enable new services, and may contribute to a more resource-efficient industry by providing tools for material traceability and process efficiency. It is also expected that new co-creation activities and projects will be facilitated through collaboration along the whole value chain in Sweden and Finland.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is divided into four work packages. WP 1 - Coordination: Coordination of the project activities, dissemination, contact with stakeholders WP 2 - Business development: Customer value propositions (incl. CO2 emissions), standardisation, expansion of the eco-system WP 3 - Technology: Methods to give steel a unique identity (incl. robust marking and fingerprinting) WP 4 - Pilots: Demonstration and evaluation in production environments, roadmap
