Purpose and goal
The aim is to strengthen resilient infrastructure and sustainable mobility by testing and scaling AI-based soil maps to reduce soil damage and erosion. Extreme rainfall events, which can wash away infrastructure and cause major disruptions, have exposed a shortcoming in current planning: insufficient knowledge of soil properties. The goal is to create improved soil maps for sustainable societal planning.
Expected effects and result
We develop new soil maps for three selected test counties. The results are delivered as open source code, GIS maps and a user manual. The test phase provides important feedback and creates the prerequisites for a long-term plan for further funding for national upscaling of the new soil maps. The maps are key to a more robust, integrated system for sustainable land use, infrastructure planning and mobility.
Planned approach and implementation
The project builds on an ongoing collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), developing AI-based methods for more accurate soil maps. In this project, we test and upscale the maps to three counties, selected to represent different landscape types. The usability of the maps will be evaluated in real workflows by the stakeholders; the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Forest Agency, Sveaskog and Komatsu Forest.
