Purpose and goal

The SMART-MINE project aims to make mining safer and more efficient using Augmented Reality (AR). By developing a virtual training module and AR-based maintenance support in the field, the project seeks to reduce accidents, errors, and downtime. The goal is to deliver both a functional technical solution and practical guidelines for how new technology can be successfully implemented and accepted in real industrial environments.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to deliver an AR-based training module and a field-ready maintenance support system that enhances safety, reduces errors, and improves working conditions in mining. It will enhance operational reliability, reduce learning time, and foster technology acceptance. Evidence-based guidelines will enable adaptation and implementation across the industry, contributing to a more sustainable and digitally advanced mining sector.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is structured into five work packages: 1) needs analysis, 2) technology development, 3) usability testing, 4) field trials, and 5) implementation support. Solutions are developed iteratively in close collaboration with users at Boliden’s mines. LTU leads research and change management, Epiroc develops the AR solutions, and Boliden provides test environments. Continuous user feedback ensures practical relevance and high acceptance.
