Sensor for Improved Traffic Safety in Tunnels

Purpose and goal

One purpose of the project was to develop the basic technology for camera-based measurements in road applications. Furthermore, a purpose was to provide the Company with a first prototype allowing field tests to be performed. Both these purposes were fulfilled and field tests with the ready prototype were carried out during the period March-April 2015. The project was also expected to give the Company an international patent application and a requirement specification for the coming product. The patent application was filed to the European Patent Office in October 2014.

Results and expected effects

The project has as expected provided the Company with the technology forming a basis for the coming product and the prototype that enabled the field tests. The project has also resulted in a expansion of the Company in the form of several new employments (in total 3 people in technical development). Finally, the cooperation with the end customer has resulted in a new project allowing us to further develop our relationship with the customer and a number of academic institutions. Within the new project, we have an excellent opportunity to further develop and test our technology.

Approach and implementation

The project was planned to be carried out in a number of work packages within data collection, algorithm and hardware development, integration and testing. Also, the project included work packages for creating a patent application, a requirement specification and a project plan for the product development. The project was carried out more or less according to plan but some work packages were delayed partly because of difficulties in identifying suitable and available consultants. The field tests were delayed mainly due to a long administrative time within the client organisation.
