Project duration November 2019 - September 2020
Status Completed
Venture Challenge-Driven Innovation – Stage 1 initiation
Call Challenge-driven innovation - step 1 initiation 2019 (autumn)

Purpose and goal

UDI stage 1 has prepared for the development of innovative adapted, energy-efficient drying systems. RISE, along with Swedish export-oriented dryer manufacturers, grain retailers, primary producers and advisers, apply for funding to develop innovative drying systems with increased energy efficiency, capacity, crop-specific adaptation and user-friendliness. Data on a lab and pilot scale are verified in full scale. Objective: strengthened competitiveness in Swedish grain production and associated industries and a more secure and safe delivery of the basic food grains.

Expected results and effects

The project´s innovation, where several actors work together to develop energy-efficient, user-friendly technology solutions aim at achieving gentle, efficient drying, handling and storage of grains, oilseeds and legumes, is expected to reduce agricultural climate impact and food waste in terms of post-harvest grain losses and to secure the delivery of sustainable, safe foods. This is done through improved technology for handling, drying and storage of our globally most important based Foods: cereals, oilseeds and legumes. The innovation is utilized by need owners.

Planned approach and implementation

RISE leads and coordinates the project to ensure that the objective and sub-goals are met. A core team of actors: grain suppliers, equipment suppliers and authorities, has performed the project, focusing on matching identified challenges and interests of need owners. In step 1, the focus is mainly on national collaboration, while steps 2-3 increasingly regard the global perspective. The reference group actively contributes to specification of requirements of the innovation and fulfillment of the utilization plan. The step 2 has been planned with the overall plan for step 3 in mind.
