Venture Collaboration projects in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure

Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project has been to develop a secure and user-friendly cloud service for Internet of Things (IoT) aimed at SMEs. The cloud service should serve as a first step for SME to try to digitize their products in a simple and secure way. The work in the project has focused on three areas. Customization of companies´ products so that communication with the cloud service is possible. Development, testing and performance measurement of the cloud service. Finally, a survey of new business opportunities was made possible by connected units.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in a liberally licensed cloud service as an open source code where security has been specifically considered. To this end, two connected demonstrators have also been created, one connected ventilation unit and one radon sensor. As well as a report on new business opportunities for connected units from SMEs. The project has led to the effect that MidDec now sells its product as an IoT service, and that AirGreen is considering a redesign of its ventilation unit to facilitate its IoT service in the future.

Planned approach and implementation

Implementation is considered successful. The resulting solution has been evaluated to be an inexpensive solution that can handle up to 3000 connected units if they share a maximum of one value per minute each. And that the business benefit has been analyzed, which showed great potential for SMEs. But there are some remaining technical barriers that complicate the solution and which cannot be circumvented. E.g, it is required to individually customize the devices depending on their application area, and that the cloud service needs to manage a certificate to secure their own website.
