Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration December 2014 - May 2015
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The main goal was to formulate a Roadmap for implementation of measurement techniques for analysis of the complete produced area, in the quality control system of a paper machine. Another goal was to gather a group with a broad competence that can participate in a future full-scale implementation project. We gathered participants from the complete innovation chain (university research institute- suppliers of measurement techniques paper industry). Three proposals for implementation were made.

Results and expected effects

The three proposals ´Grammage measurements of the whole area´, ´Identification and quantification of spots´ and ´Measurement of sizing quality in board making´, all comprise implementation of NIR scanner and IR camera techniques on the paper machine. An evaluation of the possibilities and limitations of the NIR scanner has to be done before prioritising the proposals. An application for financing such a project was made.

Approach and implementation

During three workshop days the measurement techniques and process analysis used today, and the needs of new applications of measurement techniques was discussed with experts on paper and board making, measurement techniques, analysis methods and quality control systems. Possibilities and difficulties were discussed as well as the research and development needs for a new measurement concept.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
