Important results from the project
The overall goal of the Road Data Lab (RoDL) project was to establish a community platform around open data for roads. Our ambition was to establish a platform consisting of the technical infrastructure, legal framwork, knowledge respository, and business model support. We also wanted to publish a number of data sets in the context of roads.
Expected long term effects
The community today consists of AI Sweden who provide a technical platform for storing and sharing data as well as legal knowledge and expertise, community cooperation with several partner organizations and other data labs spearheaded by RISE, and the continued work on open data in general with Lund University and others. We have published 4 data sets as part of RoDL: The Volvo highway data set, the Zenseact data, Hövding data, and a synthetic dataset for pedestrian detection. The datasets are made available under different open licenses.
Approach and implementation
We approached the building of a community platform iteratively. We started with project partner data and built a platform for sharing that data. The ambition was to extend the number of data sets and the community from input outside of the project partners. However, as our first iterations took much more time than expected, especially working with personal data, which meant we did not manage to bring in more than 1 outside data set. However, the lessons learnt from the project is that we could not have addressed the project in any other way.
