Purpose and goal
The competition has put the issue on reduction of construction and demolition waste the focus, both among the public and the industry. The contest also shows that we reward resource-efficient renovation practices. The winner received considerable attention by industry presented on the SABOs Fastighetsdagar (Conferense) with 370 participants. The winner got an exhibition space, as well as being featured in the media. On the conferense we also have held lectures on waste during renovation and the importance of innovation.
Results and expected effects
We had expected more directly useful entries. Experiences from the competition has raised many more questions. Partly on the strategy we have to choose to reduce waste, but also where in the building process it is most efficient to work with waste minimization. The actual results of the competition is that we need to work more on the issue. For example, we will work actively to deepen the knowledge of our members on construction and demolition waste. New ideas and insights are also result of the competition.
Approach and implementation
The construction industry is complex, there are many rules, for safety on the construction site but also about and the quality of building materials. This type of competition and the timescales Vinnova set for this innovation competition was too tight. More time is needed to formulate a challenge, there I lack of knowledge of the construction and demolition waste, there is no market for recycling. A technology competition had perhaps been better. In particular, time constraints have reduced the probability of success. The competitors said the time for competion was too short to compete.
