Call Impact Innovation: Resilient metals and minerals supply for strengthened preparedness

Purpose and goal

The project aims to support the Swedish stainless steel industry´s ability to maintain and adapt production, also in challenging situations. In modern steelmaking and steel research the use of computers and computational thermodynamics is central in order to predict microstructure and properties. The centre piece of such resilience is a reliable and accurate thermodynamic database and aim of the project is to improve this database in key stainless areas.

Expected effects and result

The project strengthens the metal industry’s ability to contribute to the total defence by improving the reliability and predictive capability for design of stainless steels. This contributes to industry’s adaptability to be able to maintain deliveries also in challenging situations. A reliable thermodynamic database is critical for robust and flexible production of stainless steels, which are key materials for defence relevant infrastructure, energy systems, and industrial components.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be managed by a project committee comprising representatives from the participating organisations, reporting to a steering group from Jernkontoret. The work is divided into two phases: Phase 1, which includes a resilience study, the initiation of experimental activities, and a review of previous work; and Phase 2, which covers experimental support, development of the new database, industrial testing, and workshops for information dissemination among the participants.
