Purpose and goal

The long-term societal challenge we have tried to solve in the project is to assure the quality of green roof systems installed on concrete decks with zero tolerance for leakage. Green roof gardens namely are becoming more and more necessary for sustainable social development in the city where ecosystem services have an increasingly important role in urban planning. But, specifications, guidelines, standards, certification and better cooperation between the various parties in the work process are missing. We have developed tools to address this in the form of guidelines and manuals.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in manuals and guidelines to facilitate for clients, designers and contractors in different parts of the work process - from concept and design to final installation, operation and maintenance. Expected impacts will be: safer and more proficient clients, better integrated approach and collaboration between different partners in the work process. The results will be used and evaluated in a possible Stage 3.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been organized into six work packages for treating and being responsible for various parts related to: waterproofing, insulation and concrete, plant bed and vegetation, the work process as well as standards, certification and guidelines. As case studies, a number of selected construction projects and facilities were included. These are Hornslandet, Hagastaden and Sergels torg in Stockholm and Green House in Malmö. Efforts have focused on comprehensive solutions in collaboration with various partners and stakeholders.
