Important results from the project

The objective of the project was to establish a strong European consortium and develop a competitive Horizon Europe-ansökan for a large-scale demonstration plant for slag valorization. The objectives were met by submitting a complete proposal as planned. The project also resulted in a significantly stronger consortium than originally planned and in a well-developed demonstration concept, business model and industrialization strategy for future implementation.

Expected long term effects

- Prerequisites for establishing a large-scale demonstration plant for slag valorization and thereby accelerating the industrialization of the technology. In the longer term, this can contribute to reduced carbon dioxide emissions from the steel and cement industries, increased recycling of metals and residual products, and strengthened European raw material supply. Also strengthens Sweden´s position in sustainable metallurgy, circular material flows, and industrial transformation.

Approach and implementation

Swerim and Cemvision identified relevant partners in the value chain. Swerim´s and Cemvision´s networks were used to get in touch with suitable industrial and academic partners. The work included establishing an international consortium, developing the project´s technical content, demonstration concept, business model and exploitation strategy. Through regular meetings and workshops between industry and research actors, the project was anchored in the entire value chain.
