Purpose and goal

The project´s aim to promote inter-professional collaboration and to promote interaction between industry and universities, colleges and institutes have been achieved. The goal of the project was to provide a basis for continued work to create a full development of an electrified road between Mertainen and Svappavaara. The goal has been reached. Further investigations are needed, for instance regarding funding.

Results and expected effects

Analysis of the specific conditions for operating in the Arctic climate shows that electrified roads are feasible. Some components need to be adjusted and tested in a pilot operation in the current condition before large-scale production and implementation is possible. The economic analysis shows that the transport volume, transport distance and operation time are important parameters in the calculation of profitability for an electrified road. Funding need to be further investigated and clarified. A facility of this kind provides both energy savings and environmental benefits.

Approach and implementation

The participating parties who have been part of the feasibility study have also been responsible for their respective sub-studies. Within the project, a number of project meetings and follow-up meetings have been held. At the start of the project, a site visit at the location for the electrified road was conducted.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
