Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to evaluate the resources and methodologies necessary for the characterization of the structural properties of some recycled carbon fibers produced by Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB (SES) through their patented pyrolysis process. The project allowed extended discussions between the different parties to establish the possibilities and relevance of photon/neutron techniques to investigate the structure of the recycled carbon fibers and correlate it to their properties.
Expected long term effects
The main objective was to establish a preliminary plan that would comply with this goal for investigations in the future. In that sense, the objective has been fulfilled and thus a plan for experiments in the Max IV facilities can be found as an attachment in this final report. This plan will ensure a time efficient and optimal use of the beamline allocated for the experiments if granted.
Approach and implementation
Thanks to the study of previous study and the discussions between different partners, in which they shared their expertise, an experimental plan has been established. Scandinavian Enviro Systems pertains to develop their pyrolysis process to also include composite material such as carbon fiber. The partners intend now to apply the next suitable call “Industriella pilotprojekt för användning av neutron- och fotonbaserade tekniker vid storskalig forskningsinfrastruktur” in spring 2020 with the sub call B so that planned experiments can be performed.
