Purpose and goal

The project aims to develop and demonstrate methods for balancing power demand in electrified mining through data-driven coordination of energy and production flows. The goal is to enable increased electrification of the mining industry with the decreased need for new grid infrastructure. The project will develop, implement and validate system solutions with the aim of reducing power peaks, lowering energy costs and creating conditions for flexible, robust and sustainable energy use in mines.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to result in verified methods and digital tools for planning, controlling and optimizing power output in electrified mining. Through demonstration in a real mining environment, the project will show how power peaks can be reduced without negatively affecting productivity. The effects include reduced need for grid investments, lower energy costs, increased energy efficiency and improved opportunities to integrate electrified machines.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in close collaboration between the mining industry, machine manufacturers and automation suppliers, incl analysis of the impact of electrified machines on power requirements, development of methods for integrated energy and production management, and the development of visualization and decision support tools. Solutions are developed and tested in stages and demonstrated in a real environment to verify the effects on peak power, energy costs and production capacity.
