Optical Fiber Sensors for Machine Monitoring

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - Rise Acreo, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 450 000
Project duration August 2017 - January 2020
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:

Purpose and goal

This project accomplished its main goals and generated new business opportunities and strengthened R&D collaborations between the three partners, which fully covers the industrial value chain: RISE (research), Proximion (product developer) and SKF (product owner). WP1 gave valuable system knowledge to Proximion and enabled them to modify their WistSense FBG interrogator with improved filtering methods, which will allow further performance enhancements. RISE developed a distributed optical fiber vibration sensor and succesfully validated at SKF facilities twice.

Expected results and effects

SKF and RISE AB submitted together an application, aiming to upgrade the system developed in one of this project´s work package, to the last SIP Smartare Elektroniksystem Call. Proximion is now supplying fiber gratings, mounting, software and interrogator system to SKF, which can now deliver complete load sensing bearing systems complete with interrogator and software for pump and compressor development. There are also several other pilot installations ongoing for other bearing application.

Planned approach and implementation

This project was divided into three work packages and comprised three main activities. WPs activities were mainly executed at RISE and Proximion´s laboratories and validated in relevant environments such as SKF bearing test laboratories. Proximion also used consultants for WP1 during the VHDL implementation. Periodic meetings among the partners were done to keep a close following up on the WPs results. The results obtained in the first field trial were presented in the EWOFS 2019. The results achieved in the second field trial at SKF will be published soon in a relevant conference.
