Important results from the project
Accessibility to geographic noise data in an open and platform-neutral way was generated which led to an increase of availability and access to the Regional Noise Map of Stockholm County. Information is now open to the public and provides enhanced background material for noise issues. A mapping service was created that can be used by the public. The map is accessible through random mapping applications and provides viewing, analysis as well as map generation. Information on the technique was spread to different stakeholders that deal with noise matters through seminar/workshop.
Expected long term effects
The result is a common regional noise map that can be used freely by the public via an independent map service. Due to construction and infrastructure projects that stretch cross-community there is increased need to deal with noise data on a regional level. The project generated e.g. (1) better decision-making material through a uniform picture (2) decreased costs for handling/distribution of data (3) increased importance of noise as environmental and planning issue by becoming a natural factual basis in society (4) scalability as the concept can be carried out in other parts of Sweden.
Approach and implementation
In the beginning a project plan and project group was founded. The next step was to choose the right map application and platform. The group decided on WMS-service which is most platform-independent and can be imported and used in random applications. During the period of March/April the service was built and functional testing performed. The result was spread via seminar/workshop and documented in an interim report. Afterwards a web-map was created on the homepage of the noise-network and an optimisation of the service was performed followed by an additional performance check.
