Call Deepened international collaborations for healthy and resilient societies

Purpose and goal

Veltio Pharma AB, together with actors in Finland and Åland, is formalizing a Nordic collaboration for a resilient value chain for cellulose-based pharmaceutical excipients. Veltio´s patented algal cellulose improves the absorption of poorly soluble drugs, but the raw material is currently imported from countries outside Europe. The project investigates whether algae harvested in the Baltic Sea to reduce eutrophication can become a new, local raw material, and concludes with a joint roadmap.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to result in a formalized Nordic collaboration with signed letters of intent, a feasibility analysis and requirements specification for Baltic Sea algae as a pharmaceutical raw material, a regulatory analysis, an IP framework and a roadmap for the next phase. In the long term, the project can contribute to a European supply chain for excipients, reduced import dependence and strengthened pharmaceutical resilience, as well as reduced eutrophication in the Baltic Sea.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be implemented from October 2026 to March 2027 in four work packages lead by Veltio Pharma. AP1 establishes the project structure, forms of collaboration and an initial feasibility analysis. AP2 includes gap analysis and regulatory requirements specification for the raw material. AP3 develops an IP framework and maps financing opportunities. AP4 brings together the parties in workshops for a joint roadmap and intent. The work is followed up with monthly steering group meetings.
