Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the study is to examinee how to design a system for measuring of major stockpiles using optic measurement techniques. Such a system must generate accurate results in a simple, reliable and fast way. The goal of the project was to evaluate different techniques for this purpose. The project´s outcome shows that there are sensors on the market today that meet industry requirements and there are different methods that are best suited to different measurement situations . The method best suited from a market perspective is up to a future product owner to decide.

Results and expected effects

The results show that there are several sensors whose accuracy is sufficient for the needs of the industry partners. Project results have the potential to give rise to better control the volumes of stockpiles. In addition to the project meeting the expected result, there was also some positive side effects. Primarily, it has led to a new PiiA application where a product owner as well as new industrial partners have been added to the consortium. Moreover, a new project whose idea came about during NIPS is ongoing. The project has thus contributed to increased collaboration in the region.

Approach and implementation

The project required all partners to participate and collaborate.A test plan designed to fit the needs of the industrial partners was produced and executed . Data was collected and compared with a reference technique. The project manager was responsible for ensuring that the project plan was followed and to keep all parties informed. During the project a dialogue was established with potential product owners as well as additional industry partners which has established subsequent work on the development, production and distribution of the solution.
