Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to develop environmentally benign routes to manufacture particleboards from sawmill residues. These should have sufficient properties to make them competitive against conventional resin systems. IN addition to the scientific goals, a marketing strategy needed to assess the potential of the results being generated.
Expected long term effects
A range of boards with generally good properties was achieved, with best results from succinimide with citric acid and sorbitol. Additional functionality was established through the incorporation of fire retardants systems. Despite market analysis suggesting insulation batts were more appropriate for Swedish market, these results show the potential of the new adhesive systems.
Approach and implementation
The methodology of process development based on identifying and testing compounds with limited or no environmental risks was matched with regular interaction and discussion with industrial partners to ensure the project remained on the correct track. The methods used allowed for the presentation of work at conference and for scientific publications (after agreement with companies). The clear flow of information allowed for the smooth progression of the project.
