Call Towards a sustainable development in the mining and metal extraction industry

Purpose and goal

Awareness of where metals and minerals come from and how they are mined and produced is relatively low among the general public and not least children and young people, whose future is strongly dependent on how we can solve energy and material supply in the future, while meeting climate goals. To increase awareness and knowledge about mining, permits, land use and how we can use our natural resources in a sustainable way, Metals4U has produced a description of what an exhibition about mines, metals and minerals should contain and how it should be designed to be interesting and available.

Expected results and effects

An attitude and knowledge survey on mineral and metal extraction was conducted. It forms the basis for the design of a continuation project to create environments that describe the mineral industry, the breadth of the industry and the connection to our everyday lives. With works of art that have a local connection to mining, it will be possible to create a stronger understanding of metals and minerals that we use and depend on. As a complement to the works of art, digital educational tools will be developed, and existing tools will be further developed and made available via a platform.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has mainly been carried out with video meetings, where the project group´s representatives have been very involved. The composition of the group has been very meritorious and directly decisive for the project´s development, as it has spanned several different areas in terms of knowledge and also in relation to how to look at the extraction of metals and minerals linked to other issues, such as land use. Project partners also played a vital role in the implementation of the survey, as it would have been difficult to realize without a fast and efficient network of contacts.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
