MEMS Chip Waveguide Technology

Reference number
Coordinator TRXMEMS AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 489 502
Project duration October 2015 - May 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

TRXMEMS goal for the project was to investigate the FTO for a new, innovative technology to build integrated waveguide microchips in MEMS technology. In addition to the FTO investigation, TRXMEMS intended to apply for relevant patents to allow sharing of technical details with interested customers. The final goal of the project was to develop a baseline technical specification and a first concept demonstrator design of a complete radio transceiver module in the novel MEMS based technology.

Expected results and effects

Thanks to strong customer interest and interest from partners and suppliers, the project managed to develop a more complete solution than initially intended. An FTO investigation has been carried out during the project and patent applications have been filed. After creating a specification for a first concept prototype TRXMEMS along with two other suppliers developed a detailed design and process for mass production of MEMS based transceivers in the new technology.

Planned approach and implementation

TRXMEMS role has in large part been to bring together established expertise in their respective fields (RF and MEMS), and the challenge has been to develop communication solutions that streamline interaction during the design phase. This challenge was also evident in the interaction between TRXMEMS and patent attorneys. Thanks to customers and external partners seeing the potential of the developed solution, the project as a whole has been more successful than anticipated and a more complete solution has been developed than expected at the beginning of the project.
